An astronaut captures Doha from space

Dr. Wakata Koichi, an engineer and astronaut for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), posted a photo of Qatar on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, while he was on board the International Space Station (ISS) for a planned spacewalk. Citizens and residents of Qatar would immediately identify the seven-kilometer promenade known as Corniche, which is shown in the centre of the image with The Pearl and Lusail nearby.

The Shahaniyah Camel Race Track may also be seen as an elliptical shape in the top-right corner of the image. The Al Bayt Stadium is also lit up in the bottom-right corner of the image. The 59-year-old astronaut has also released images from orbit of other nations outside Qatar, including the view of Italy’s sunset, Abu Dhabi’s nighttime landscape, and the bright sky above Monterey, Mexico, among others. On February 2, Koichi Wakata is due to perform a spacewalk while still in orbit above the Earth on the International Space Station. Nicole Mann, a NASA astronaut, will work with him to finish installing the gear for upcoming power system changes.
