FIFA Council elects Qatar Football Association President

The Honorable At the 33rd Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress in Manama, Bahrain, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, President of the Qatar Football Association (QFA), was chosen to join the FIFA Council, the organisation’s key decision-making body.

After receiving 40 votes, the most of the seven candidates running for the five seats, H.E. the QFA President’s win was declared. AFC Executive Committee members for the years 2023–2027 were chosen by delegates from the continent’s member associations in addition to Asian representatives for the FIFA Council. His Excellency Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa was re-elected as the president of the AFC during the 33rd AFC Congress after running unopposed. The AFC Congress is the governing body for football in Asia. AFC members from various regions and nations gathered in person for the first time since the Congress’ extraordinary meeting in Paris in June 2019. The gathering also included FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
