Qatar is optimistic about the growth of its tourism sector, with plans to increase visitor numbers and boost the country’s GDP. Berthold Trenkel, Chief Operating Officer at Qatar Tourism, spoke at a joint event hosted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Qatar Tourism, where he stated that the country expects to receive 6 million visitors per year by 2030, up from the current number of 2 million. This influx of visitors is anticipated to increase spending by three to four times and boost GDP from 7 to 12 percent.
Trenkel also revealed plans to double employment in the tourism sector. UNWTO’s Executive Director, Zoritsa Urosevic, highlighted the potential for tourism to contribute to economic growth and development, stressing the importance of scaling up the sector’s transformation and digitalisation for inclusive growth and prosperity for LDCs.
