QFA Makes History With Virtual Advertising Technology
Qatar's own startup Sponix makes history as QFA deploys virtual advertising in a live match for the first time.

Qatar just made history in sports broadcasting.
The Qatar Football Association (QFA) has deployed virtual advertising technology for the very first time in its history. The project was carried out in partnership with Qatari tech startup Sponix and broadcaster Alkass. It took place during an international friendly match between Qatar and Ireland in Dublin.
This is a significant moment not just for football, but for Qatar’s growing reputation in sports technology.
QFA and Sponix: What Happened
During the Qatar vs Ireland friendly in Dublin, Sponix integrated sponsor placements directly into the live broadcast using its cloud-based SPboard platform. The technology ran entirely remotely. No hardware on site. No cameras installed at the stadium. Everything ran through the cloud.
Mansoor Al Ansari, Secretary General of the Qatar Football Association, praised the project. He said the QFA was pleased with the implementation and highlighted its ability to create new commercial value for sponsors and partners. He confirmed the QFA looks forward to exploring further opportunities in this area.
Mohammad Ali Abbaspour, CEO of Sponix, called it a historic milestone for the company in the region. He confirmed that Sponix is now expanding its partnerships across the Middle East, with several major competitions lined up. He also gave special recognition to Aspire Zone Foundation a key strategic partner whose cooperation made the QFA project possible.
How Virtual Advertising Technology Works in Football
Virtual advertising is not a physical banner. It is a digital overlay inserted directly into the live broadcast feed using software.
The viewer sees the ads on screen. But on the actual pitch, there is nothing there.
SPboard goes further. It allows different audiences to see different advertisements at the same time from the same live feed. A viewer in Qatar sees one sponsor. A viewer in Europe sees another. A viewer in North America sees a third. All without any disruption to the match.
This opens entirely new revenue streams for football federations. Sponsors can target specific markets. Federations can sell the same broadcast slot to multiple regional sponsors simultaneously.
The technology is also carbon-neutral. It uses no physical infrastructure and consumes far less energy than traditional pitch-side advertising.
Why This Is a Major Win for Qatar’s Sports Industry
Sponix is not a foreign company. It is a Qatari startup founded in 2020 in Doha. It operates out of Qatar Business District and was supported by the Qatar SportsTech accelerator program, backed by Qatar Development Bank.
The company already works globally with beIN Sports, MBC, the Jordan Football Association, the UAE Pro League and several European federations. During the UEFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, SPboard delivered virtual advertising across three camera angles for the first time in UEFA history.
Now Qatar’s own football association is using the same technology. That matters.
