Who Is Now Eligible for Qatar National Service?
Qatar's Ministry of Defence has opened National Service to children of Qatari mothers and Qatar-born residents, here is everything you need to know.

Qatar has opened its National Service programme to a wider group of residents.
The Ministry of Defence made the announcement on June 9, 2026, in an official post on X. The decision was issued by Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs. For the first time, children of Qatari mothers and non-Qatari residents born in Qatar are now eligible to join the programme.
This is a significant policy change. Until now, the programme was restricted to those with Qatari fathers.

- Career pathway: National service graduates are prioritised for recruitment into the Qatar Armed Forces.

Why This Decision Is Big for Qatar Residents
This decision broadens who can serve and who can benefit. Many long-term residents born in Qatar have deep ties to the country. Children of Qatari mothers are Qatari by heritage but were previously excluded.
The Ministry of Defence stated the move is aimed at broadening participation in National Service and creating opportunities for a larger group of eligible residents to contribute to national defence.
For many families in Qatar, this announcement opens a door that has been closed for years.
